bird vs. bunny

Every morning we get up at 6:45, and most of my time is spent getting Austin’s butt moving. Bathroom. Dress. Eat. Teeth. Wash face. Winter gear. Backpack. Wait for the bus. The only time I have to get ready is while he is waiting for the bus and after he leaves (7:28 a.m.). So, after he’s set, he sits in front of the picture window (sometimes with Peyton) watching and waiting for the bus. Most of the time I’m back out of the shower and he’s still waiting. But, sometimes I just hear the door slam and he’s off. This morning I heard Damian raise his voice a little and I threw a towel around me and headed out of the bathroom to see what was going on. Damian was questioning, “Austin, I just don’t understand how this could happen. . . .did you see the bus?” To which Austin replied, “ah, yes Dad, I did see the bus.” Austin proceeded to explain to Damian that it wasn't his bus. His bus is the bird bus. That was the bunny bus. It turns out, he saw the “bunny bus” go past our house and he rides the “bird bus”. These are little symbols located where the numbers are on the bus so the kids know which bus to get on when they return home from school. I can only guess that the bird bus had technical difficulties and the bunny bus replaced it. At any rate, now Austin knows that any bus that comes down our cul-de-sac is for him.

boring life.

I’m struggling for a blog entry. Life has been pretty boring lately. We’re all feeling better. Christmas is over, tree is down. Not much is new.

We went to the
Building for Kids on Saturday. Pretty fun. Austin loved watching the garden-scale Lionel train. Peyton loved people watching. Damian enjoyed the trip to the new Fleet Farm. We all enjoyed the trip to Pizza Hut afterwards.

he was sick. i was punished.

Well, it turns out Austin wasn’t feeling well last week. I have confirmed proof because on Friday I came down with the awful stomach flu, and on Saturday, Damian was ill too. I feel like we were punished for not believing Austin. I am still not feeling 100% but at least I’m out of my bed and headed back to work this morning.

Austin lost his first tooth this weekend! And, the tooth fairy came last night. What is the going rate for the tooth fairy these days? I suggested $20. And, I was laughed out of the room. I’m sorry, but I have a husband who suggested $0.10. I needed a starting point for negotiation. I guess $1 would have been adequate because when Austin awoke to $5 in dollar bills under his pillow he referred to them as “bucks”. Not 5 bucks, just “bucks”.

putting my foot down

School called. Austin is not feeling well and is coming home sick! GGGGRRRrrrrr! I am putting an end to this madness. I'm headed home for the rest of the afternoon to make sure his sick day is not a vacation day! More to follow.

the sickies

After having the stomach flu on Sunday night and Monday, Austin said he was still feeling too sick to go to school yesterday. Yesterday, around 10:30 a.m. I called home and heard him laughing and squealing in the background. Lisa said he was chasing Peyton around the kitchen. “Oh” I said, “tell him I’ll be home in ten minutes to take his little butt to school.” But, when he got off the bus last night he had explosive diarrhea. I felt a little guilty for making him be at school.

Fast forward to this morning. He’s tired and I assume it’s because he stayed up until 8:30 p.m. and he now remembers that if he is sick, he doesn’t have to go to school. Damian and I yell “get dressed, get dressed now" followed by "get dressed or you're going to bed early", followed later by, "get dressed or we’re coming in there to strangle you”, you know, the usual morning routine, but oh, he “doesn’t feel so good”. After a brief debate, I have him ready to go out the door, he coughs and gags . . . I wimp out and he stays home. Am I being played by a 5 year old? I don’t know. I told him we’d have to take him to the Dr. My initial thought on this was if he was healthy there is no way he would want to go to the Dr.'s office. Plan backfired - he agreed, he needed to see a Dr. Now, I had to follow through, I told him if the Dr. says he’s healthy then he goes to school. He weighed in at 44.5 lb.s, throat looked good, ears looked good, and Dr. was just about to tell Austin what I needed him to hear, then Dr. listens to Austin’s lungs and uh oh, they are totally congested. Not good and it’s what’s causing him to be so tired the last 7 weeks.

$65 (office visit) + $32 (prescription) = $97 later, Austin is exactly where he wanted to be all along – at home, with Lisa, playing toys and watching movies.

numero uno

The start of a new year, and I’m committing myself to add a few blog entries this year. I want to be able to record Austin & Peyton’s milestones and other events in our life. Here goes . . . entry numero uno . . .

Austin had a wonderful Christmas. He enjoyed playing games with family. His favorite toy? Hard to tell, he’s been giving each toy equal attention.

Peyton enjoyed going to the family gatherings this season. The girl likes to go.
